Most Beautiful Chant ever recorded – A Review

by Rita Davidson

“Prefer nothing to the love of Christ” is something we could all aspire to live up too. This was a quote from St Benedict that the Fr Monks of Norcia have resurrected in 2000.

I got this complimentary CD in the mail sometime ago and have been meaning to share my thoughts of it with you. FINALLY today is the day. Whew!

As I sit here with school books spread all over our table today I have this Marian Chant CD playing. It really adds to the ambience of our homeschool day. If you have special needs, or ADHD kids, this music is a MUST. It lends a comforting background to learn by. Seriously, don’t take just my word for it, but there is scientific evidence that low levels of chanting help the brain and body function better. They say it can even help improve handwriting!

It has 33 tracks of Gregorian chant, including “Regina Caeli” and “Ave Regina Caelorum” and some never recorded tracks.

It is interesting to note that after Vatican II when monks discontinued their chanting, they began to develop health problems. After some study, it was only after adding back the traditional chants they began to improve. The low level singing has been shown to actually “massages the body from the inside out” says Dr Tomatis and his research from the 1950’s. (1)

With all the research for the benefits with learning, there are lots of other opportunities Chant would benefit. It isn’t surprising that God would have built into Chant such benefits for a sick world today? A beauty that is ever ancient, ever new…

With all the research how what we hear helps improve our brain, I’m going to be using this here with my elderly mother with mild dementia. Her hearing loss is what has started her dementia I always thought. And here is a little proof of that.

How about working in the kitchen? I know when I’m in the kitchen I have two pots boiling, something in the oven, kids running around screaming, dishes to wash, the phone ringing. It’s a multi-taskers heaven! Chant adds a lovely calm and serenity to an otherwise busy time.

Driving is another hectic time, not always if you have a lovely long stretch of road. Whether busy city streets or lovely landscapes Chant would add an aura of calm to your driving.

The story of how these Monks got their beginning is quite amazing. The city of Norcia was the birthplace of St Benedict. After Napoleon suppressed their order in 1810 they were never rebuilt. Two hundred years passed, and those townspeople never forgot! Then in the year 2000 the city REJOICED to welcome back monks to their town again. Truly we must ALL HOPE that God IS restoring His church in His own way, and in His own good time.

Listening to Chant brings us back to a time when the Faith was a part of our culture. A time when small towns lived around a monastery and families days were in tune with the monastery feast days and times. We have lost much of the real catholic beauty of this culture today which is why society is running headlong into boredom without God.

I’m very thankful to the Monks for putting out this Chant CD.  I encourage you to support their restorative work in the Church by making this CD a part of your collection and bringing real peace to your families. You can get your copy of this LOVELY Marian Chant CD HERE

with love,

Rita Xo 🙂
