BAHHH HUMBUGG
By Rita Davidson
Do you have your decorations up yet? I’ve been seeing advertisements for Christmas since October… Dollarstore’s began putting in a Christmas aisle first. Then bigger stores started in November. By the time December actually arrives everyone is tired of it.
We don’t have TV here otherwise we’d likely be bombarded with all the jingles of advertising too. We have a few lights up now…my favorite snow covered banister with lights from last year. But no tree yet. As my mother’s nurses coming in daily they are surprised to see we have no tree yet. I was thinking about that the other day and thinking how disappointed they seem when they don’t understand why.
Advent is supposed to be penitential. Not like Lent, but penitential all the same. That’s why purple is the color for Advent. (haha you didn’t make that connection til now eh?) Now it’s not about fasting and all that stuff, but it’s not time to play Christmas songs and all those things that take away from the excitement of Christmas day. I thought wow, outsiders must think we are BAHHH HUMBUGG with such small decorations. Yet again the rest of the world is not even letting us SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS now…it’s not “CORRECT”. BAHHH HUMBUGG it is.
Meanwhile, the Christmas lights outside are glowing all along the highway and in the streets in town. We even went through the Christmas lights display here, and was surprised to see so many nativity scenes. Very impressive I thought.
So we’ll wait til closer to Christmas for our tree. (Not Christmas Eve, that would be too crazy here.) And we might even buy one sooner and keep it outside until its closer to the day. But what I hate is the day after Christmas it’s ALL GONE.
Sheesh if it was the Queen they would have tea parties for a week but for the King of the world, it’s all packed up the next day. Oh don’t get me started…
But you know Christmas day is just the BEGINNING! Christmastide lasts until February 2nd! I was just telling my hairdresser the other day about St Nicholas Day and she was amazed saying, “wow, you have all those Feast days ?” I was saying St. Nicholas brings little trinkets and then there is Epiphany in January…and she was just amazed. There has been some years we spread out gifts for all 12 Days of Christmas just to stretch out the excitement! I even told her some years we did gifts like that and got everything on sale AFTER Christmas too! J
I realized then what an amazing faith we have. That so much joy has been planned for us to celebrate the truths of our faith. Is it any wonder that others don’t want to join the Church to have this GIFT we all take for granted?
So remember this year when your feeling BAHHH HUMBUGG from the weather, the rush, the gifts, the money, the family fighting, and everything else; we have one AMAZING GIFT of a faith. Brought to us 2000 years ago, on CHRISTMAS DAY, through a New Born King, which is Christ the Lord.
When do you get up your tree and decorations? Share your traditions with us!
With love,
