Essential Oils, the Occult, Facts and your Family
By Rita Davidson
I read a post from Women of Grace with interest last week, but it wasn’t until I was asked to comment that I decided to write this.
Women of Grace wrote about the possible connection between Essential oils and the occult and what she found was ”indeed disturbing”. You can read that post HERE.
Yes, we use Young Living oils. I have also used herbs, homeopathy and other ‘natural things’ for many years. I studied for my natural health degree (from a now closed institute) and ran a natural health baby supply catalogue in my early twenties, so I’m pretty well versed in the language and outlook on many of these places.
But when poor research has the ability to place doubt and fear in a lot of people, that really makes me upset.
CREDIBILITY
The blog referred to – The Last Hiker – that Women of Grace sourced for ‘information’ has some issues of their own. The Last Hiker blogger is herself, against many, many other things she calls sinful, or witchcraft etc. It is always a little suspect when someone finds “sin” in every corner.
After a little more poking around I found The Last Hiker considers the Rosary a “sin”. She writes,
“In the book Edwards encourages readers to “pray the rosary” a practice of holding a Catholic Crucifix necklace and uttering repetitive chants in prayers to Mary, the mother of Jesus in the Bible. This practice is sinful for several reasons. As shown above, Christians are not to communicate with the dead. Whether it is a relative, someone from the Bible or a celebrity, any attempts to speak with the dead is necromancy. Secondly, Mary was just a normal person. We are not to pray to her, hail her or seek anything from God through Mary. 1 Timothy 2:3 says: “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” It is Jesus Christ who is our advocate with God The Father. He is our High Priest who we take our” (1)
Ouch, this person does NOT understand what it means to be Catholic I guess. One has to wonder how credible someone can be like this who has herself an ‘occult’ background, sees ‘sin’ in every corner and has an anonymous blog. That’s my second hesitation to her credibility.
This writer uses poor research. At one point she says oils “do work”, then in another breath says, “they are not approved by the FDA”? Contradiction perhaps?
Finally, to support her opinion she dredges up some bad press about Gary Young. Yes, Gary Young has a “colorful” past. Regardless of the personal life story of Gary Young, it should not be used to imply the oils themselves are somehow evil.
WHAT ESSENTIAL OILS SHOULD BE
Essential Oils are simply collected from herbs and plants that we all use everyday. Lemon oil is simply from Lemon, Pepper oil is from Pepper, etc. Many oils can be used in the kitchen to replace of the same herbs or spices, which is handy if you run out of them.
Essential oils are available from a wide range of companies today. You can even get some at dollar stores! When you hear about an oil that didn’t work you can be sure it was a cheaper knock off oil. But only Young Living has the “seed to seal” process that guarantees purity from seed to final product. See www.seedtoseal.com
This guarantees we are not getting fake oil, or chemical oil made to ‘smell’ like an oil, or a diluted oil, as many others are. It is important if you are going to use Essential oils that they are true distillations and not just happy “smells”.
ESSENTIAL OILS and the BIBLE
Essential oils of Myrrh and Frankincense were given to the baby Jesus along with Gold, by the Three Kings, I’m quite sure they didn’t dare bring him something that was wicked for his birth?
In the Garden of Eden when God created the Earth and put Adam and Eve in the garden he said,
“And God said: Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed upon the earth, and all trees that have in themselves seed of their own kind, to be your meat”
God blessed us with many plants and herbs that have been for our meat, our fuel and our healing. Essential oils are derived from nature just as God planned. Different oils have been known for centuries for certain uses like skin health or internal health. Modern day blends simply take those uses and combine them for a stronger use for an ailment. I think there is still much to be discovered about natural health that science is only beginning to uncover.
When Jesus was buried they used Essential oils to prepare the body for his burial. Most likely the same Myrrh and Frankincense that Our Lady saved since his birth, along with others.
MODERN ESSENTIAL OILS
Tea tree oil is widely acceptable oil, known to be very good for skin infections. Oregano oil is another commonly available oil that has become very popular for it’s anti-viral properties. These are just a two that have gained a lot of ground today because; the medical community could not ignore their fantastic healings.
More and more essential oils being studied with medical studies. There are 16,893 entries on term “essential oil” on the National Library of Medicine PUBMED. Here is a recent entry for Bergamot oil:
Rational Basis for the Use of Bergamot Essential Oil in Complementary Medicine to Treat Chronic Pain.
“In complementary medicine, aromatherapy uses essential oils to improve agitation and aggression observed in dementia, mood, depression, anxiety and chronic pain. Preclinical research studies have reported that the essential oil obtained from bergamot (BEO) fruit (Citrus bergamia, Risso) modifies normal and pathological synaptic plasticity implicated, for instance, in nociceptive and neuropathic pain.” (2)
ESSENTIAL OILS and the DARK AGES
Its true should ALWAYS be cautious NOT to jump into the first thing we see. Letting our True Faith guide us is always a good idea. But the claims from the Last Hiker against Gary Young are full of emotion rather than fact. There has been a witch-hunt out for Gary Young and Young Living from various corners, because of his great success with oils. This is partly why the FDA stepped in and Young Living has been feverishly getting more studies to back up their oils.
As faithful families used herbs and essential oils throughout the ages they were just as much used by witches and sorcerers for dark uses. But let’s look at this more closely. For example read this:
“APPLE (Domestic)
Another sacred tree to the Druids. It is said that you may cut an apple into three pieces, then rub the cut side on warts, saying: “Out warts, into apple.” Then bury the pieces and as the apple decays, the warts will disappear. Use apple cider in any old spells calling for blood or wine. Apple indicates choice, and is useful for love and healing magic.” (3)
This is was from a witches website to prove a point about something we use everyday as well. Apples. Does this mean we will all should stop eating apples?
New age users and witches have been using oils and herbs since time began, but just like a gun can kill, it doesn’t make a gun intrinsically “evil”.
We must “be wise as serpents and as gentle as doves” today. There is much we should be wary of it is true. But believing false information only keeps us in a box it doesn’t always keep us safe. As herbs and essential oils come from the dark ages, they must now live up to the scrutiny of the medical community. Until then we will hear many opposing views about them. Many of us have used them from years regardless of what the medical community has said because they work for us.
Troubled people like the Last Hiker that see “sin and evil” everywhere are unbalanced. To say, “Young Livings ‘oil blends’ are blatant potions.” Is laughable. That is like saying a certain blend of FLOUR is a POTION and not a CAKE? Since when has ‘blending’ become sure proof of witchcraft? She doesn’t even provide proof of this. We blend recipes for every matter of food to create meals. We blend herbs to create an herb blend, why are ‘essential oil blends’ suddenly POTIONS?
Women of Grace says several cautious priests have said these oils are ‘blessed at the point of manufacture’? What proof do we have of this? Young Living manufacturing is open to the public. Their fields are opened for public visits as well as their plants. How many other companies can we say come from evil owners with evil intentions? The bigger the company the bigger the suspicions, but again are we just seeing, ‘evil in every corner”?
I would say these concerns come from lack of knowledge about something. God says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I also will forget thy children.” ERV
If we want to live in this world, we must have a certain TRUST of this world. None of us are prepared to start living in caves again. Nor should we have too.
Women of Grace asks, “So what’s the difference between what witches have been doing for centuries – and what many of these essential oil producers are doing now? “
INTENTION
A witch can cook up a brew of chocolate muffins with a ‘spell’ on them, just as a Catholic mother can make up healthy a batch for her children. It is the INTENTION that counts. Just as a priest on the altar needs to have the INTENTION to Consecrate otherwise Jesus DOES NOT come DOWN into the host, if we don’t have the INTENTION to do evil we DO NOT do evil.
Granted some Young Living blends can be vague, but why would I buy oil with a description like,
“Abundance™ is created to enhance the frequency of the harmonic magnetic energy field that surrounds us. This higher frequency creates what is called ‘the law of attraction,’ which refers to the things we attract to ourselves. Abundance opens us to a wealth of possibilities.”
What is my ‘intention’ if I buy that oil? You see how important INTENTION is, in all we do. If we do not wish to do evil, we will always choose good. We know Essential oils aren’t miracles in little bottles so we don’t expect them to act that way. We know they are simply a tool like anything else, that God has blessed us with to use for the therapeutic needs of our bodies. If you have the right intention you are not going to buy oil for for spiritual uses. Or at least you shouldn’t be. In all the years I’ve used Essential oils, I’ve never bought oils that don’t have a direct use for our bodies or mind. God will take care of my soul.
There is much more I could say on this topic but I’ve kept you long enough. I hope this answers your main concerns for now.
If you have any questions or concerns about Essential Oils, please be sure to post them below and I’ll do my best to answer them for you!
With love,
Rita 🙂
